Memories
Quake was quite something, right? For me, it was one of the first if not the first full price big box game that I've bought for my humble Pentium 75. Before that, it was either budget releases in jewel cases or the (awesome) Bestseller Games magazine. Well, or copies. I've played Doom, Doom II, Heretic and Hexen as well as RotT, Dark Forces and other FPS at that point of time but those games, well, I didn't buy at the store, I just had them installed like we all had back then. The games were fun of course, but Quake will always outshine them thanks to what we now call user experience and that's not limited to playing the game, no, it's my emotional bond with the game as a whole and that started with me reading the first preview about the game and ends with me sitting here, typing this little personal trivia bit for my site. Actually, it won't end here, Quake will most likely always be in my life.
Anyway, back to 1996: I went to the store, bought the game, headed back and installed it. I remember that I didn't boot it up right away, but hesitated for a second. Taking a deep breath, thinking to myself: That's Quake, something I haven't seen before, something not only a tad better than Doom & co but it's beyond what was possible before. Something that will melt my brains. And it did, right from the start, with the theme song pushing hard and the dark, murky world calling for me. My friends and I loved it and the next few weeks were all about Quake: the levels, the secrets, our let's-do-shotgun-only runs.
Not too long ago, we had Quake's 25th anniversary and with that, a remaster for all current platforms — including the Nintendo Switch, my main gaming system in the past years. Again, downloading and installing felt magical and again, I didn't start it up right away but waited for a quiet hour, sat down with a drink, put in my ear phones and once again got ready for having my brain melted.

Spotted a logo for the Quake Engine on the "Hexen II: Portal of Praevus" box. Don't think I've seen a logo for it anywhere before.
